Effects of gamma irradiation on antioxidant enzyme activities in black carrot callus under stress
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council, 2026) Turan Büyükdinç, Damla; Tabay Sümbül, Dilruba; Mansoor, Sheikh
Daucus carota L. (carrot) is a commercially significant root vegetable widely cultivated in temperate regions for its edible taproot and valued for its high nutritional content. This study aimed to investigate the effects of drought stress on callus tissues of the Hatay black carrot (Daucus carota L. ssp. sativus var. atrorubens Alef.) genotype and to determine the impact of different gamma radiation doses on antioxidant enzyme activities. Black carrot callus tissues were exposed to gamma irradiation at doses of 0, 7, 8, and 9 Gy to evaluate their responses to drought stress. Antioxidant enzyme activities, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), as well as biochemical parameters such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels, lipid peroxidation measured as malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and soluble protein concentrations, were quantified. Callus formation was completely inhibited at a polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentration of 15%, whereas a gradual decrease in callus production was observed at 5% and 10% PEG. Enzyme activity analyses revealed significant increases in CAT, SOD, and APX activities in gamma-irradiated carrot callus tissues exposed to drought stress compared with control tissues. Furthermore, drought stress resulted in elevated H2O2 and soluble protein levels, accompanied by a marked increase in lipid peroxidation, as indicated by MDA content. Multivariate analysis revealed that key oxidative stress markers and antioxidant enzymes significantly influence plant stress responses, indicating the presence of complex regulatory networks. Antioxidant systems play a central role in mitigating stress, with distinct pathways independently regulating oxidative damage markers. The results suggest that differences between gamma-irradiated callus lines and control callus tissues under drought stress conditions may provide valuable insights for future in vitro selection and stress-response studies in carrot.
The sectarian transformation of nusayrism in the Ottoman empire
(İlahiyat Bilimleri Araştırma Vakfı, 2026) Erkan, Ümit
This study explores the Ottoman Empire's policies toward Nusayr & imacr; communities between 1519 and 1874 within the framework of religion-politics relations. It examines how the ghul & amacr;t al-Sh & imacr;'a portrayals of Nusayrism in classical Islamic Sects History literature relate to the sect's position within Ottoman administrative practice, highlighting both continuity and transformation. The research addresses the lack of scholarly attention to how a group often labeled non-Islamic in classical sources was treated in Ottoman political thought as a potentially integrable community. Using a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, the study combines classical sectarian literature, Ottoman archival documents, and modern historical sources. While classical texts define the conceptual and theological boundaries of Nusayrism, the archival records reveal how Ottoman authorities translated these perceptions into concrete administrative policies. The findings indicate that the Ottoman administration's approach toward the Nusayr & imacr;s was built upon a religiously exclusionary legacy inherited from the Mamluk period, which was subsequently reinterpreted in accordance with changing administrative and political needs. Within this framework, theological exclusion and special taxation predominated in the sixteenth century; security concerns and the discourse of banditry became decisive in the seventeenth century; a pragmatic language centered on provincial finance and local power relations emerged in the eighteenth century; and in the nineteenth century these differing approaches were reorganized within the legal standards introduced by the Tanzimat reforms., Nusayrism was redefined within the Ottoman political tradition as a community open to reform and integration, moving beyond its esoteric and closed character attributed to the pre-Ottoman period. This transformation became traceable along a continuum from religious discourse to administrative practice, demonstrating how the Ottoman administration reinterpreted theological classifications within an administrative framework centered on public order, security, and the ideal of communal unity.
Numerical investigation of sinusoidally patterned thin-walled tubes with variable wall thickness under quasi-static axial loading
(Golden Light Publishing, 2026) Kuleyin, Hamdi
Enhancing the crashworthiness and energy-absorption capacity of lightweight tubular structures is essential for improving safety while meeting modern demands for weight reduction in engineering applications. This study aims to investigate the effects of sinusoidal corrugation patterns with variable wall thickness on the crashworthiness behavior of circular thin-walled tubes. A validated 2D axisymmetric finite-element model was developed in LS-DYNA, and corrugated tube configurations were designed with one-sided (OS) and double-sided (DS) thickness variations, and their quasi-static compression responses were examined. The results revealed that corrugation geometry significantly enhances crashworthiness characteristics compared to a straight tube. The OS-2.75 configuration exhibited the most pronounced improvements, achieving increases of 31% in mean crushing force, 34.3% in total absorbed energy, and 13.5% in specific energy absorption (SEA). Meanwhile, the DS-2.75 model showed enhancements of up to 24% and 20% in mean crushing force and total energy absorption, respectively, with the DS-2.5 tube offering a favorable balance between mass reduction and improved performance. The findings demonstrate that corrugation-based thickness tailoring is a robust and efficient design strategy for improving the crashworthiness of thin-walled tubes. The presented approach offers valuable guidelines for the development of lightweight energy-absorbing components in automotive, aerospace, and protective engineering applications.
