Regional genetic diversity and COI haplotype characterization of human-derived Enterobius vermicularis ısolates
(Springer, 2026) Bedir, Hilal; Çiftçi, Nurullah; Öztürk, Murat; Önk, Ayşegül; Shahbazova, Masma; Bahçeci, İlkay; Arslan, Mükremin Özkan
BackgroundEnterobius vermicularis (pinworm) is a globally distributed intestinal nematode that primarily infects children. Despite its high prevalence, information on the molecular diversity of human-derived E. vermicularis populations remains limited, particularly in geographically diverse regions such as T & uuml;rkiye. This study aimed to characterize genotype and haplotype diversity based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene in E. vermicularis egg isolates collected from humans in different regions of T & uuml;rkiye.MethodsA total of 71 microscopy-positive samples were analyzed by nested PCR, and 40 COI amplicons (397 bp) yielded high-quality sequences for further evaluation. Sequence analysis revealed 16 distinct haplotypes defined by 20 polymorphic sites. Overall haplotype diversity was high (Hd = 0.871), whereas nucleotide diversity was low (pi = 0.00714).ResultsAmong the regional populations, the highest haplotype diversity was observed in Kars (Hd = 0.895), while the highest nucleotide diversity was detected in Bal & imath;kesir/Edremit (pi = 0.00927). Maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that all T & uuml;rkiye haplotypes belonged to Genotype B and formed three subclusters together with previously reported human-derived reference sequences from Europe and the Middle East. Seven haplotypes showed no 100% match in GenBank and were therefore considered novel, whereas the remaining haplotypes were identical to genotype B sequences previously reported from Greece, Bulgaria, Iran, Iraq, and T & uuml;rkiye.ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this study presents the first COI-based haplotype dataset of E. vermicularis egg isolates from multiple regions of T & uuml;rkiye and demonstrates substantial intraspecific genetic diversity despite the predominance of a single mitochondrial genotype. These findings expand current knowledge of the genetic structure of human-derived E. vermicularis in T & uuml;rkiye and provide a basis for future large-scale molecular epidemiological studies. Further studies including larger sample sizes and additional genetic markers are needed.

Potentially toxic metal levels in cheeses produced in Türkiye: regional variation, milk source, ripening stage, production type, and associated dietary exposure and health risk
(Springer Nature, 2026) Gürmeriç, Hüseyin Ender; Şengül, Mustafa; Başaran, Burhan
This study investigated potentially toxic metal (PTM) levels in cheeses produced in different regions of T & uuml;rkiye and evaluated the associated dietary exposure and non-carcinogenic health risk. A total of 84 cheese samples were collected from seven geographical regions and classified according to milk source, ripening stage, and production type. After microwave-assisted acid digestion, PTM levels were quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and exposure and non-carcinogenic risk were evaluated using Estimated Daily Intake (EDI), Target Hazard Quotient (THQ), and Hazard Index (HI). Aluminium (Al), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) ranged from <0.00215 to 7.29,<0.00769 to 38.8, and 0.68 to 56.6 mg/kg wet weight, respectively, whereas chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) ranged from <0.58 to 244, <1.26 to 369, <1.88 to 4067, <0.91 to 1378, <0.06 to 12.3, and <2.19 to 1754 & micro;g/kg wet weight, respectively. Values marked with "<" represent concentrations below the limit of quantification (LOQ). Arsenic (As) was not detected in any sample. Significant differences were observed for selected PTMs according to ripening stage, milk source, production type, and region (p<0.05). The toxicological contribution (TC) values for nutritional PTM exposure were low. THQ and HI values remained below 1, suggesting a low overall non-carcinogenic risk; however, Pb exceedances in some samples indicate the need for continued PTM monitoring.

Transitioning to higher education: a case study of an individual with autism
(Wiley, 2026) Yazıcı, Mahmut Serkan; Baş, Şenay; Karnas, Mustafa
Necessary arrangements should be made to enable university students with autism (the term "autism" is used to refer to the entire autism spectrum in this study) to improve their transition to university. The need for support may be higher in countries like T & uuml;rkiye, where the number of university students with autism is relatively low, as universities have limited experience with these students. Thus, this study focuses on the transition process of an individual with autism to higher education in T & uuml;rkiye. It aims to contribute to the transition processes of the student and, accordingly, of future students with autism. In this qualitative case study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with an individual with autism and members of his close circle during his transition to higher education. The study involved 29 participants: the university student with autism, two family members, eight high school teachers, eight university lecturers, and ten university classmates. These interviews were conducted during the first semester of the individual's first academic year, a critical period in the transition to university. During the research process, it was discovered that there was no transition plan for students with autism at the university where the research was conducted. Therefore, it is concluded that the experience gained by the participants during the university education process with a student with autism is not sufficient alone for his transition to university, which started with uncertainty. Over time, the process led to prejudices and misconceptions, while unrealistically high expectations resulted in disappointment. At the end of the semester, uncertainty remained. In addition, it was found that the absence of a transition plan caused cultural factors to become more dominant. In line with the research results, based on the transition process of the university student with autism in this study, suggestions that may be useful for future university students with autism are presented.

Inborn errors of immunity awareness among physicians: multicenter data from Turkiye
(İstanbul University, 2026) Güngören, Ezgi Yalçın; Yüsbaşıoğlu, Merve; Aygün, Emre; Çalışkan, Nilay; Altunbaş, Melek Yorgun; Çimen, Sevgi Sipahi; Arınç, Asena Pınar Sefer
Objective: To assess the awareness, diagnostic approach, and perceived barriers related to inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) among physicians caring for pediatric patients in Turkiye. Methods: In this cross-sectional online survey (July-October 2025), 488 physicians completed a 44-item questionnaire covering ten domains, including demographics, IEI-related education, recognition of clinical warning signs, use of immunologic tests, referral patterns, and perceived barriers. Participants comprised pediatric specialists, pediatric residents, pediatric subspecialty fellows/attendings, family medicine specialists/residents, and general practitioners. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and group comparisons were performed using the chi-square test (p<0.05). Results: The mean age of participants was 33.7 +/- 6.5 years; 61.9% worked in university or training and research hospitals. Overall, 63.5% had previously evaluated a child with IEI, but independent diagnosis was mainly confined to pediatric subspecialists (57.4%) and pediatricians (47.4%), and was rare among family physicians and general practitioners (3-6%). Recognition of IEI-associated clinical features showed a clear specialty gradient: pediatric subspecialists consistently achieved the highest scores across infectious, autoimmune/inflammatory, dermatologic, neurological/syndromic, and growth/genetic domains, whereas family physicians and general practitioners demonstrated significantly lower recognition (p<0.001 across domains). Only 52.7% of physicians had heard of the Jeffrey Modell warning signs; however, 82% expressed their willingness to receive further IEI-focused education. Major reported barriers included limited laboratory capacity, insufficient training, difficult access to immunology specialists, and complex referral pathways. Conclusion: Substantial gaps in IEI knowledge and diagnostic practices exist, particularly in non-infectious domains and among primary care physicians in Turkiye. Targeted educational programs, improved access to immunologic testing, and streamlined referral pathways are urgently needed to facilitate earlier recognition and better outcomes for children with suspected IEI.
