Electronic, magnetic, optical, and thermoelectric properties of K2OsCl6 for spintronic and energy harvesting applications

We report a comprehensive first-principles study of the structural, electronic, magnetic, optical, and thermoelectric properties of the double perovskite K2OsCl6 using density functional theory (DFT) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The calculations predict a ferromagnetic ground state with a total magnetic moment of similar to 1.99 mu B per formula unit, largely arising from Os atoms (similar to 1.33 mu B). Spin-resolved electronic band structures reveal robust half-metallicity, featuring a metallic majority-spin channel and a direct minority-spin band gap of similar to 0.8 eV, yielding nearly 100% spin polarization at the Fermi level. The optimized lattice constant of 10.45 angstrom shows excellent agreement with experimental data. Optical analysis demonstrates strong spin-dependent behavior in the visible and ultraviolet regions, with a peak absorption coefficient of similar to 1.5 x 10(5) cm(-1) at 6 eV and static dielectric constants of 4.2 (spin-up) and 3.8 (spin-down). The refractive index exhibits anomalous dispersion, reaching refractive index values up to 2.8 in the visible range. Thermoelectric calculations indicate a Seebeck coefficient of similar to 180 mu V/K at 900 K, electrical conductivity of 4.5 x 10(5) Omega(-1) m(-1), and low thermal conductivity of 2.8 W m(-1) K-1 at room temperature.

Restoring soil functionality and improving wheat yield through integrated farmyard manure, compost, crop residues and decomposition enhancers

BackgroundWheat productivity is frequently constrained by the slow turnover of soil organic matter (OM), which limits nutrient mineralization and reduces their bioavailability to plants. In this context, the present study was conducted to assess the effects of different OM sources on wheat growth, phenological attributes, yield attributes, chlorophyll content and soil physicochemical properties, with a focus on improving sustainable nutrient management strategies for improving wheat productivity and soil health.ResultsA field experiment was conducted over two consecutive winter seasons (2022-2023 and 2023-2024) at The University of Agriculture, Peshawar-Pakistan. The experimental design comprised two factors: (i) OM sources supplying 120 kg N/ha, including no residue (control), farmyard manure (FYM), compost, and wheat crop residues; and (ii) decomposition-enhancing materials (DM), namely control, Bio-organic phosphate (100 kg/ha), Bio-aab at the rate of 25 L ha- 1 (microbial biofertilizer), and humic acid at the rate of 15 kg ha- 1 was applied as leonardite-derived granular humic acid containing 70% humic substances. OM along with DM were incorporated into the soil 7 days before sowing under optimal field moisture conditions using a field cultivator. Wheat cultivar 'Pirsabak 2015' was sown at a seed rate of 120 kg/ha. Experiment was arranged in a RCB design with three replications. Individual plots measured 3 & times; 5 m and consisted of 10 rows with 30 cm inter-row spacing. The incorporation of OM delayed phenological development relative to the no-residue control. Among the tested treatments, FYM and compost consistently resulted in greater plant height (86.32 and 86.38 cm), spike density (236 and 239 m- 2), grains number (45 and 45), grain weight (41.94 and 41.47 g), biological yield (10385 and 10385 kg ha- 1), grain yield (2977 and 2998 kg ha- 1), and chlorophyll content (chlorophyll a: 23.37 and 23.07; chlorophyll b 44.74 and 45.59; and total chlorophyll: 68.66 and 68.88). Among DM, humic acid improved wheat growth traits, including plant height (87 cm), spikes m- 2 (245), grains spike- 1 (46), grain weight (43 g), biological yield (10452 kg ha- 1), grain yield (3013 kg ha- 1) and chlorophyll content, compared with other treatments, resulting in better biomass accumulation. Regarding soil fertility, Bio-aab or Bio-organic phosphate combined with FYM or compost increased soil mineral nitrogen, organic matter, total nitrogen and organic carbon. The highest net income in economic analysis (279415 ha- 1) was recorded in FYM + humic acid treatment. The highest value cost ratio (VCR) was observed in no residue + humic acid, followed by FYM + Bio-aab and FYM + humic acid.ConclusionAcross both seasons, the combination of FYM and compost with humic acid improved crop growth and yield, while untreated plots recorded the lowest values. Integrated application of FYM or compost with humic acid, Bio-aab or Bio-organic phosphate is recommended to enhance wheat productivity and improve soil fertility under semi-arid conditions.

The feminist political economy of agricultural mechanization: tea harvesting machines and women's work in turkey's black sea region

Tea harvesting in Rize, located in Turkey's Black Sea region, where around 65% of the country's tea is produced, offers an important vantage point for understanding how mechanisation unfolds in feminised smallholder agriculture. Despite widespread promotion of agricultural machinery as a labour-saving solution, little is known about its gendered consequences in contexts where production depends heavily on unpaid family labour. This article examines the recent introduction of tea-harvesting machines in smallholder farms in Rize, drawing on extensive fieldwork to analyse how mechanisation reshapes women's work and intra-household power relations. In this setting, the adoption of harvesting machines emerged primarily as a pragmatic household response to labour scarcity and mounting pressures of social reproduction, rather than as a strategy of commercial modernisation. The analysis highlights two key gendered consequences of mechanisation. First, mechanisation reorganises rather than reduces women's labour, devaluing women's embodied knowledge and practices while rendering their contributions less visible within measures of productivity. Second, mechanisation diminishes women's embodied authority over selective harvesting, as machine-based cutting sidelines the sensory judgement and care-based practices that previously anchored their expertise. Finally, the adoption of machines emerged not as a step toward commercial modernisation but as a household response to labour scarcity and a deepening crisis of social reproduction. By integrating feminist technology studies with Marxist feminist agrarian political economy, the article demonstrates that mechanisation in Rize is a gendered socio-technical process that reconfigures labour, skill, and authority within petty commodity production. This challenges assumptions of neutral, labour-saving technological progress and highlights the need to situate agricultural innovation within the intertwined dynamics of gender, ecology, and social reproduction.

A Neoclassical realist analysis of Turkey's foreign policy towards Egypt in the period following the 25 January revolution

Until the 25 January Revolution of 2011, T & uuml;rkiye's foreign policy towards Egypt largely followed the same line as that of the Western world, but this changed in the wake of the revolution. The conservative government in T & uuml;rkiye played a decisive role in this shift. In 2012, the Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan) rose to power in Egypt. T & uuml;rkiye pursued a different policy from many other actors and established extremely positive relations with the Ikhwan. Following the ousting of the Ikhwan from power, T & uuml;rkiye adopted a highly critical stance towards the new administration and maintained limited diplomatic relations with it for a long period. However, in the 2020s, a return to a more traditional stance in policy towards Egypt was observed. Unlike many other studies, this work analyses the subject within a theoretical framework and argues that the fluctuations in T & uuml;rkiye's foreign policy towards Egypt during this period can only be explained from a neoclassical realist perspective.

We report the draft genome sequence of Serratia proteamaculans strain SK20 isolated from diseased rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from an aquaculture facility in T & uuml;rkiye. The genome is 5.38 Mb with 55% GC content and contains 5,012 predicted protein-coding genes.
