A comprehensive review of solar photovoltaic thermal technology: Performance evaluation and recent discoveries
(Springer, 2026) Elmnifi, Monaem; Al-Asadi, Hasan A.; Hammoodi, Karrar A.; Cüce, Erdem; Aleksandrovna, Duyun Tatyana; El-Khozondar, Hala J.; Salih, Shahad A.
In the field of simultaneous electricity generation and thermal energy recovery, photovoltaic thermal (PVT) systems represent a promising solution; however, their performance is strongly dependent on the strategy used for recovering the heat, the choice of the working fluid, the stability of the materials, and the operating conditions. This structured critical review fills the gap in previous review literature, which tended to consider phase change materials (PCM) integration, nanofluid cooling, the design of the absorber, and the use of air-/water-based collectors separately. The novelty of this review is to build a comparative framework that categorises the recent developments in PVT into air-based, water-based, nanofluid-enhanced, PCM-integrated, and hybrid PVT systems and correlates the performance indicators with technical limitations, reliability, cost, and scalability. A review of approximately 250 published papers from 2000 to 2024 found that the following systems are compared, thermal management strategies are reviewed, and operating conditions and reported performance trends are discussed. The synthesis reveals that air-based PVT systems are still the simplest and costliest systems, with the reported efficiency range of 30–45%. Water-based and nanofluid-based systems are better at heat removal, with electrical efficiencies of 12–16% and thermal efficiencies of 50–75%, primarily because of the enhanced convective heat transfer and decreased PV cell temperature. Currently, PCM-integrated systems have been found to have thermal efficiency of 55–80% and offer passive thermal stabilisation; however, their long-term feasibility is compromised by low thermal conductivity, degradation, leakage risk, cost, and cycling reliability. Hybrid systems with the combination of nanofluids, absorber optimisation, and PCM generally exhibit the best overall performance, with some studies reporting overall efficiencies of up to 88.86% under optimal operating conditions. However, the advantages do not appear in all studies and are influenced by pressure drop, pumping power, and stability of the nanofluid, degradation of the PCM, testing conditions, and definitions of efficiency. Standardised testing, long-term outdoor validation, techno-economic assessment, durable low-cost materials, and intelligent monitoring and control strategies for scalable PVT deployment should be prioritised for future research.
Elicitors in plant defense: exploring their role in biotic and abiotic stress resistance
(Springer, 2026) Altaf, Muhammad Tanveer; Liaqat, Waqas; Rahman, Muhammad Aneeq Ur; Anuforo, Chidera; Maqbool, Asia; Ali, Amjad; Baloch, Faheem Shehzad
Plants face various biotic and abiotic stressors that threaten their growth and survival. To combat these challenges, they employ complex defense mechanisms activated by elicitor molecules, which enhance their immune responses and stress tolerance. Elicitors are classified into biotic (e.g., chitin, chitosan) and abiotic types, engaging plant defense pathways through receptor recognition and signaling cascades. Biotic stress elicitors stimulate immune responses, including reactive oxygen species production and systemic acquired resistance, thereby fortifying plants against various attackers like bacteria and fungi. Conversely, abiotic stress elicitors, such as jasmonic acid and salicylic acid, help plants cope with harsh conditions by regulating hormonal networks and increasing protective compounds. Integrating elicitor strategies with innovative biotechnological methods, like genome editing and nanotechnology, presents promising avenues for sustainable crop protection. This review highlights the potential of elicitors as eco-friendly alternatives to traditional agrochemicals, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of their mechanisms to enhance crop resilience against climate change and new threats.
Struggles in providing psychosocial support services to survivors of the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes from professionals’ experiences

Background: On 6 February 2023, the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes created a severe crisis, underscoring the essential yet challenging role of psychosocial support (PSS). This study explores how PSS professionals identified and addressed survivors’ needs, as well as the operational struggles professionals encountered during the disaster response phase. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study, following the COREQ guidelines, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 PSS professionals across four severely affected provinces (Kahramanmaraş, Malatya, Gaziantep, and Hatay). Reflexive thematic analysis revealed that psychosocial distress stemmed not only from acute traumatic experiences but also from environmental insecurities in tent and container cities, including the risks of violence, abuse, neglect, inadequate care, and poor hygiene. Results: The results indicate that psychosocial distress is not only an immediate impact of traumatic experiences, but also a major manifestation of the environmental insecurities (such as abuse, violence, neglect, care, and hygiene) and societal fragmentation in the shelter environments. The results highlight the rising prevalence of acute stress disorders among survivors, increased domestic tensions, and the consolidation of traditional gender roles. This has a disproportionate effect on women’s well-being and on the access to caring for older adults and persons with disabilities. Despite the committed efforts of PSS professionals, systemic limitations – such as short-term staffing, limited coordination, and insufficient infrastructure – restricted service effectiveness. Conclusions: The complexity of providing effective PSS in disaster situations has become even more apparent due to inadequate resource allocation, logistical problems, and major administrative challenges. This study calls for well-coordinated and gender- and culture-sensitive psychosocial interventions and the involvement of well-resourced institutions and organizations to enhance the effectiveness of disaster response.
Targeting ceramide metabolism to overcome osimertinib resistance in egfr-mutant non-small cell lung cancer: an in vitro, network pharmacology, and in silico study
(Bentham Science Publishers, 2026) Selvi, Oğuzhan; Sezer, Canan Vejselova; Cengiz, Mustafa; Aztopal, Nazlıhan; Kutlu, Hatice Mehtap
Introduction: Osimertinib, an irreversible epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor, is recognized for use in non-small cell lung cancer patients with the T790M resistance mutation. Though osimertinib offers a valuable advantage in survival of the patients, the occurrence of acquired resistance mechanisms confines the long-term efficacy of the therapy. Subsequently, evaluating the resistance mechanisms and generating alternative cure approaches are vital for improving therapeutic efficacy in advanced NSCLC. Herein, the aim was to research the effectiveness of inhibitors of acid ceramidases as promising alternative agents on targeting resistance-related cellular susceptibilities in osimertinib-sensitive (H1975/OS) and osimertinib-resistant (H1975/OR) NSCLC cells maintained under long-term exposure to osimertinib. Materials and Methods: The cells were exposed to carmofur and B13 for 24, 48, and 72 hours. Antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects were investigated using the sulforhodamine B assay, and half-maximal growth inhibition (GI50), Total Growth Inhibition (TGI), and half-maximal Lethal Concentration (LC50) concentrations were detected. Proapoptotic activity was investigated using annexin V and caspase 3/7 techniques on a cell analyzer. The morphological alterations were investigated using confocal microscopy. Results: The analysis results indicated a proapoptotic effect in both cell lines for carmofur and B13. Carmofur exerted moderate cytotoxicity at all concentrations, while B13 showed weak efficacy at the tested high agent concentrations. Remarkably, the resistant cells remained sensitive to carmofur and B13, indicating that ceramide metabolism may be effective in a therapeutic setting in resistant NSCLC. Discussion: The results offer strong support for further mechanistic and translational investigation. Conclusion: The results suggest that carmofur and B13 are promising alternatives for therapeutic targets in drug-resistant lung cancer cells.
Mindful eating and Chrono-Mediterranean diet adherence associated with lower gastrointestinal symptom burden in young adults
(Frontiers Media SA, 2026) Altınsoy, Canan; Demirel, Özbek; Çelik, İsa
Objectives – This study aimed to investigate the relationship between gastrointestinal symptom burden and Chrono-Mediterranean diet adherence and mindful eating in young adults. It also sought to explore the role of microbiota awareness in this relationship and identify factors associated with Chrono-Mediterranean diet adherence. Methods – This cross-sectional study involved 677 young adults and employed convenience and snowball sampling. Data were collected through face-to-face interactions using a personal information form, the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), the Bristol Stool Chart, the Chrono-Mediterranean Diet Score (CMDS), the Expanded Mindful Eating Scale (EMES), and the Microbiota Awareness Scale (MAS). Descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and multiple linear regression analyses were performed using SPSS (IBM, NY, USA) version 30.0, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results – Among the 677 respondents (mean age: 20.79 ± 2.34 years; 75.2% female), GSRS scores were negatively correlated with microbiota awareness (r = −0.182, p < 0.001) and the CMDS (r = −0.141, p < 0.001), but were not correlated with mindful eating. However, microbiota awareness was positively correlated with mindful eating (r = 0.092, p = 0.017) and the CMDS (r = 0.205, p < 0.001). In multivariable analyses, male sex, non-smoking, higher levels of mindful eating, and higher CMDS scores independently predicted a lower gastrointestinal symptom burden (R2 = 0.11, p < 0.001). Higher CMDS scores were independently predicted by physical activity, not smoking, not drinking, increased microbiota awareness, and higher levels of mindful eating, whereas obesity was identified as a negative predictor (R2 = 0.15, p < 0.001). Conclusion – Greater adherence to the Chrono-Mediterranean diet and higher levels of mindful eating were independently associated with lower gastrointestinal symptom burden in young adults. Although microbiota awareness was associated with symptom burden in univariate analyses, it was not an independent predictor after adjustment. These findings highlight the potential relevance of diet quality, meal timing-related dietary adherence, and eating-related awareness for gastrointestinal health in young adults.
