Pseudocyesis developing after multiple traumatic experiences: a case report2
(Bulgarian Psychiatric Association (BPA), 2026) Sayer, Ömer Naim; Hocaoğlu, Çiçek
Pseudocyesis is a rare condition defined as a false belief of pregnancy in a non-pregnant indi-vidual, typically accompanied by pregnancy-related symptoms. It is often comorbid with other mental disorders. We present the case of a 30-year-old single woman admitted to a psychiatric ward with psychotic symptoms. Her history included traumatic life events: the loss of her twin sister at the age of 17, two years of social isolation at home due to Guillain-Barré syndrome at 24, and a leg fracture from a house fire at 27. Following these events, she exhibited psychotic and depressive symptoms but showed poor treatment adherence. During her hospitalization, she presented with abdominal distension and expressed a firm belief in her pregnancy despite evidence to the contrary. Her symptoms improved after a four-week inpatient stay. Factors contributing to the development of pseudocyesis in this case were an introverted personality, mild intellectual disability, prolonged social isolation, traumatic experiences, and elevated prolactin levels due to stress and antipsychotic use. The patient’s belief in her pregnancy, combined with objective pregnancy-like symptoms such as amenorrhea and abdominal distension, led to a diagnosis of pseudocyesis over delusional pregnancy. However, due to significant clinical hetero-geneity, distinguishing between these two conditions is not always possible. Successful treatment en-compasses addressing comorbid mental health disorders, establishing a strong therapeutic relationship, providing social support, and managing underlying organic conditions that may contribute to the development of pseudocyesis.
Is there any effect of lycopene’s preventing peritoneal adhesion formation in rats: an experimental study
(Permanyer Publications, 2026) Bilgi, Ahmet; Terek, Mustafa C.; Yiğittürk, Gürkan; Taşkıran, Dilek; İlgen, Orkun; Yılmaz, Bülent; Kulhan, Mehmet
Objective: Effects of lycopene in prevention of intra-abdominal adhesion formation in a rat model. Methods: Twenty-eight rats were divided into four groups consisting of 7 rats each. Group 1 (only adhesion), Group 2 (adhesion + corn oil), Group 3 (adhesion + 5 mg/kg lycopene), Group 4 (adhesion + 20 mg/kg lycopene). Adhesion score, histopathology, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) H-score, malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity, and VEGF values were measured. Results: There were significantly higher extent, severity, degree, and total adhesion scores in the control and corn-oil group than in the low lycopene and high lycopene group. VEGF H-scores were significantly lower in lycopene-given groups, regardless of dose. When the low lycopene and high lycopene groups were compared in terms of anti-VEGF H-score, no significant difference was observed. Malondialdehyde levels were statistically significantly lower in the control and high lycopene group. Conclusions: Biochemical parameters, histopathological examination, and adhesion scoring revealed that lycopene significantly reduced adhesion formation.
Deep learning detection of facial nerve enhancement in Bell’s Palsy
(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2026) Akkaya, Habip Eser; Polat, Önder; Hürsoy, Nur; Akpınar, Dorukan İnanç
Background and Objectives: The facial nerve, or seventh cranial nerve, with its complex course and association with multiple pathologies, remains a critical area of study. Bell’s palsy, an idiopathic condition leading to unilateral facial weakness, is frequently diagnosed through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which can reveal inflammation or pathology within the facial nerve. However, physiological enhancement can complicate diagnosis, particularly in healthy individuals. This study aimed to assess facial nerve enhancement in Bell’s palsy patients using machine learning algorithms. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 306 MR images from subjects, including 156 Bell’s palsy patients and 150 controls, and trained a DenseNet-based deep learning model to identify pathological enhancement with an 80% accuracy (area under the curve (AUC) 87%). Results: Our model achieved an accuracy of 80% and an AUC of 87% as compared to neuroradiologist’s decision, demonstrating its potential to aid clinicians in diagnosis. Conclusions: Future studies with external validation and larger datasets may further enhance the clinical applicability of AI-based assessment tools for facial nerve pathologies.
The synergistic protective effects of bioactive catechins in longjing tea: alleviate indomethacin-induced gastric toxicity through modulation of inflammatory and apoptotic pathways
(Frontiers Media SA, 2026) Topçu, Atilla; Toprak Semiz, Ayça; Deniz, Esra; Öztürk, Çiğdem; Nalkıran, İhsan; Sevim Nalkıran, Hatice; Mataracı Karakaş, Sibel; Arpa, Medeni
and consumed tea products worldwide. Although interest in Longjing tea (LT) has grown due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, studies exploring its potential health effects remain limited. The purpose of this study was to reveal the potential preventive effects of LT on oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis occurring in gastric ulcers induced by indomethacin. Methods – The composition of LT was determined using HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography). The control group received only tap water via the oral route for 14 days. The indomethacin-only group was administered 100 mg/kg indomethacin in a single oral dose following 24-h fasting. The indomethacin + famotidine group received 40 mg/kg famotidine via the oral route 1 hour before gastric ulcer induction. The members of the indomethacin + LT group received oral LT for 14 consecutive days. A gastric ulcer was induced after 24-h of fasting, and the experimental groups were sacrificed at the end of the sixth hour. Malondialdehyde, glutathione, cyclooxygenase 1 and 2, vascular endothelial cell growth factor A, nuclear factor kappa B, cleaved Poly ADP-ribose polymerase, pan-Akt, and p-Akt levels were examined at the tissue level. Results – Oxidative stress and inflammation, increased by indomethacin, activated the apoptotic cascade. LT showed partial anti-oxidative changes but significantly suppressed PARP-1 expression. The limited bioavailability of catechins may have restricted protective efficacy. Conclusion – The research showed that LT may be a promising agent with partial antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties.
Optical and electrical properties of SiC/p-Si heterojunction
(Springer, 2026) Taşyürek, Lütfi Bilal; Orak, İkram; Sarılmaz, Adem; Özel, Faruk
In this study, SiC was used to manufacture Al/SiC/p-Si/Al heterojunction structure by thermal evaporation method. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) analyses were evaluated for the characterization of semiconductor SiC layers. For the electrical characterization of the heterojunction, current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V), and conductance-voltage (G-V) parameters were measured at room temperature (RT) and under various illumination conditions. Ideality factor (n) and barrier height (Фb) values were calculated as 1.32 and 0.85 eV in the dark and 1.22 and 0.77 eV at 100 mW/cm2 illumination at RT, respectively. The results provide information indicating that Al/SiC/p-Si/Al heterojunction structure is promising for photovoltaic devices.
