Objective: Mature cystic teratomas are the most common benign ovarian tumors. It is accounts for about 15-20% of all ovarian neoplasm. This is a retrospective study of patients with a diagnosis of mature cystic teratoma of our department aimed to identify the clinicopathological features. Material and Methods: Recep Tayyip Erdogan University Faculty of Medicine Pathology department between 2010-2013 were retrospectively analyzed 50 patients with a diagnosis of mature cystic teratoma. Cases are evaluated in terms of the patients' age, tumor size, tumor location, tumor markers and malignant transformation. This review is obtained from the patients' pathology reports and clinical data from the archive files. Results: Of 50 cases, the finding on mature cystic teratomas were as follows: the number of tumours located at the right ovary was 66% (33), the left ovary 30% (15), with 4% (2) cases bilaterally. Age range was mean rate 37.02 (17-72). The mean diamater of the tumor were determined 7.4 cm. In four cases (8%), tumor markers were high. Two cases was obtained incidentally during delivery. The statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between patient age and tumor size (p<0.05). Tumor size increases with age (p<0.05). There is no statistically significant relationship between tumor markers as normal or high and tumor size (p>0.05). The incidence of malignant transformation was finded 4% (2). One of the cases with malignant transformation in the development of squamous cell carcinoma, in the other case papillary microcarcinoma within Hashimoto tiroditis was identified. In both cases showing malignant transformation and tumor diameter of 10 cm above the postmenopausal stage. Conclusion: In our study, the relationship between tumor size and patient age were statistically significant. For this reason, especially in terms of large-scale clinical and pathologic mature cystic teratomas, malignant transformation should be considered as a more careful examination in postmenopausal women.
