Poti, under the Ottoman rule served as a barrier for the security of the Caucasian coasts and inlands. Its defensive function has become more prominent as a result of Russia’s policy of expanding its borders. The city’s entry into Russian rule in 1829 brought about the rise of a new port on the Ottoman border; It has experienced a rapid development and transformation, especially with the withdrawal of Trabzon-Tabriz trade to Russian territory and the commercial facilities, Poti has become the main port of Tbilisi, the administrative center of the Caucasus. The aim of this study is to analyze the change with the emergence of new ports with Russia’s expansion from north to south, in other words, the development of Poti in terms of port and urbanization and its competition process with the ports of Redut Kale, Sukhumi, Batumi and Trabzon in the light of Russian and Ottoman sources.
